While I understand the appeal of CWs and the request to hide explicit material, I question the drive to curate posts in favor of a heteronormative, non-furry viewpoint.

I actually saw someone partially broach this subject a while ago with the subject of CWing fursuits.

Yes I understand not everyone is into them and some are outright bothered by them...but this IS a furry instance?

I'm also somewhat bothered by tendencies to hide displays of same-sex affection.

I've been a bit confused myself because I love posting pictures of animals but I don't know if pictures of an animal need to be CW'd.

Like I post pictures of my pet Leopard Gecko all the time, but do I need to put the pictures behind a CW?

I mean, I tend to do it because I understand some people are fearful of Lizards.

@Tau_Leonis I mean, as a rule there isn't a need.

I understand that Mastodon is a place that a lot of people come to in order to feel safe. But censoring your content just for the sake a few people seems problematic.

It also strikes me as unrealistic. It's a lot easier for those people who have a problem with content you post to block you, than for you to anticipate what is and isn't okay for every single person who potentially might see your post.

@Tau_Leonis I mean at that point, you're CWing literally every post and that seems to defeat the purpose of posting at all. Eugen made this statement, which I feel is appropriate:

"Please don't demand content warnings from strangers. Content warnings are a sort of social contract between an author and their followers; if you are not happy with how someone chooses to use them, do not follow that person or outright mute them, or mute words.

@Tau_Leonis One of the most alienating experiences on Mastodon I've observed is when someone posts about something they're passionate about or is part of their identity and the first response is "please cw that" from a complete stranger.
