on a work call & they're scoping stuff out. nearly laughed on the call when they said it'd be done for feb
@patterfloof Sounds like a project I was on several years ago.
Them: This is a very aggressive schedule but it can and will be done.
Me: *Wipes laugh spittle from screen*
Project was finished two months behind schedule.
Like the boss once pestering me for an estimate
"I can give you a time, won't bear any relationship to reality though"
Or a different company, much earlier "ask me again & I'll double it"
@patterfloof I hate estimating, especially for things I'm not familiar with. There's so many things that could go wrong, and at the end of the day it's just a guess that ends up being used as fact. It's very frustrating.
I'm in software. Everything we make is new, often a research project, so there's no way to go "well, last time it took me yay-long, so about the same"
@patterfloof I'm in industrial automation, but I occasionally write software and yeah, big mood.
