Alt-Right recruitment tactics, what to look for, minor US_rel mention

I know this is a difficult topic to discuss.

I decided to look into how the Alt-Right recruits people and found this explanation.

As someone who was recruited into a Fundamentalist Evangelical Cult I recognized most of these tactics immediately as variants were used on me.

I would recommend reading this and looking for warning signs in your family, friends, etc. Talk to them before it is too late.

These are definitely cult recruitment tactics. I know because I was in a religious cult and at one point was even being trained as a recruiter.

1. Talk to an isolated person who feels left out / unwanted.

2. Invite them over, then love-bomb them.

3. Invite them to everything, become their circle of friends.

4. Start having them distance themselves from their earlier friends and family.

This is Cults 101 stuff here.

advice from author

If someone you know begins to espouse this ideology it is important that it is confronted. Ask the person you know why they feel that way, ask them if they feel alone or powerless, ask if they need a friend, discuss why dehumanizing others is wrong, and strive to facilitate empathy. Part of saving our friends and acquaintances who feel isolated or sad or angry from being preyed upon by bigot groups is us being supportive while clearly condemning hateful ideology or beliefs.

@jankoekepan @Tau_Leonis

"activists all auditing everyone for dog whistles that seemingly only they can recognise..."

Can they not explain why these are indicative of the whole cult thing? Are they not actually using logic and reasoning here?

@jankoekepan @Tau_Leonis Are you talking about the author of this article as one of the activists? Because he's not just saying "X people are Nazis! Go get 'em!"; he's actually laying a foundation for his arguments, explaining _how_ to recognize these clues yourself.

@jankoekepan @Tau_Leonis Oh, okay. So your problem isn't with the author's points themselves, but rather with their broad classification making _other_ people go after people they shouldn't necessarily?

@jankoekepan @Tau_Leonis But do leftists have things like "keep the long-term goals covert"? That's a pretty big step beyond "it's better not to alienate the people you're trying to convince".

Also, would you mind elaborating on the overblown conclusion you suspect the author is making?

@jankoekepan @Tau_Leonis Well, it can be very easy to forget that you should be carefully analyzing people's arguments. This seems to be saying "stop and think critically", which is a very good thing to remember.
